Southeast
SUP Championship

The first annual Southeast SUP Championship held in Wilmington, NC put on by Coastal Urge and hosted at Dockside Restaurant was a very successful event. Victory Koredry loose fit shirts were used as the official jerseys for this event as well as last May’s Intracoastal SUP Cup and with slightly inclement weather they worked out especially well according to race directory Jeoffrey Nathan.
The 3.5mile course took racer’s around Harbor Island, which is located on the Inter Coastal Water Way giving racers plenty of challenges with the tide, wind, and selecting the fastest line.  Standup paddleboarders from all over are getting into the SUP racing scene, with two racers traveling all the way from Hawaii to compete in the Southeast SUP Championship.

The pre-race dinner on Friday evening kicked off the event with live music and some great food and beverages.  Following the race on Saturday there was an awards ceremony and raffle, with all proceeds from the race going to the Surfrider Foundation.  Live bands played into the evening with crab races for the kids and wine and beer tasting for the adults.

This was Coastal Urge’s third race in the past three months with the SE SUP Championships held in May and the Cold Stroke Classic in December.  You can still compete in one of these great races in 2009, the 2nd annual Cold Stroke Classic will be held again in December.  Stay tuned to Standup Paddle Magazine for the date and more information.
